120 Years

From the moment the ranger Rudolf Gabessam from Fryšava brought the first ski till entering the world speed record of Radek “Rocket” Čermák into the Guinness Book of Records. It is almost 120 ravishing years of passion and emotion of Czech brand SPORTEN, which loves skiing and brings you THE JOY OF WINTER.

Important events

  • 1896
    Forester Rudolf Gabessam from Fryšava brought the first ski from Styria and in 1892 from Finland. Adolf Slonek from Rokytno, renowned carpenter, started to manufacture the skis according to these models and launched the tradition which endures to this day.
  • 1905
    A “Skating club” was established in Nové Město na Moravě, whose pleasing task was to go in for winter sports.
  • 1910
    The club's name was changed to "Sports Club" and became a member of the Ski Association. First races were organized as well as a training course, which was led by the famous ski hero Bohumil Hanč.
  • 1913
    First races with international participation was organized.
  • 1918
    Rapid development of ski production started, numerous craft manufactures were established. Not only for local needs now. Good work of contemporary producers found its way into sports goods stores. By 1930 ski production already had good reputation on the market.
  • 1948
    This year brought the nationalization and socialization of trade establishments.
  • 1950
    National enterprise Sport associating manufacturers of sports equipment was founded in Prague. Since it was no longer possible to expand the plants in Nové Město na Moravě, it was decided to build a new plant in the area at Pohledec. Initial working force was 36 people. The basis of the production program were full-ash tourist ski. Only racing cross-country skis were manufactured as laminated.
  • 1955
    The plant started to specialize on production of laminated skis of all kind – racing and touristic.
  • 1956
    Products obtained internationally registered mark ARTIS, which was used for tennis rackets by that time.
  • 1957
    First export shipment of children's laminated skis was carried out.
  • 1962
    World's first fiberglass cross-country skis Artis Sapporo with plastic base were produced.
  • 1963
    In 1963-1964 a construction of a new factory with target capacity of 250,000 pairs began. Seventies - a huge shortage of downhill ski on the market, the factory bought the technology to produce them.
  • 1971
    Production of water skis Slalom and Acrobat in the new facility was started.
  • 1973
    New extruder for base production was purchased.
  • 1974
    Member of the national women's relay team Gabriela Sekajová won a bronze medal during the World Cup in Falun, Sweden on skis from Nové Město na Moravě.
  • 1975
    Karel Kodejška, a member of the Czechoslovakia national team, became world champion in ski jumping using jumping ski ARTIS Sokol from Nové Město na Moravě.
  • 1976
    The factory bought equipment for manufacturing of injected skis.
  • 1987
    Highest employment was achieved – 469 workers.
  • 1989
    World markets opened completely and the national enterprise became out of breath. Also the independence on the national company Artis took place.
  • 1990
    December 1st, 1990 a state owned company Moravia Sport was established, then on March 1st a small joint-stock company Nova Sport Euro was established.
  • 1991
    April 1st, 1991 Moravia Sport company was closed down and all assets were transferred to Euro Sport Nova Inc., today Sporten, Inc. Subsequently, the company was privatized in the voucher privatization and restitution claims were settled. New world markets were opened - Japan, Scandinavia, USA et al.
  • 1993
    Miroslav Jakeš as a first Czech conquered North Pole in international ski expedition on Sporten skis.
  • 1996
    310 thousands pairs of skis and snowboard were manufactured.
  • 1999
    World speed record in tandem speed skiing 195.65 km/h was defeated by Jan Lesák and Martin Bauer on Sporten skis.
  • 2000
    Cap construction skis were developed.
  • 2002
    Aleš Valenta won the Olympic gold medal in Salt Lake City. Entrance area together with a shop and a sports center has been completed.
  • 2003
    Five-axis milling machine for production of molds and shaped cores of skis and snowboards was purchased. An investment in sublimation equipment that allows to produce smaller batches of a lower cost and to test product designs prior to production, was made.
  • 2004
    This year brought the award “Prestigious building of the Highlands” for entrance building of Sporten, Inc. company.
  • 2014
    A unique grinding center Sapphire Pro II from Montana company, Switzerland was purchased.
  • 2015
    Radek Čermák´s world speed record 145,875 km/h on cross-country skis was entered into the Guinness Book of Records.
